RSS -	Regional Security System

Het Regionaal Veiligheidssysteem is een organisatie voor de gezamenlijke defensie van de meeste lidstaten van de Organisatie van Oost-Caribische Staten en Barbados. Het Veiligheidssysteem moest een antwoord bieden op dreigingen die de veiligheid in de Caraïben in de periode rond 1980 in het gedrang brachten. Het systeem patrouileert tegenwoordig de Caribische Zee en onderneemt er acties tegen de smokkel van onder mee drugs. Het Regionaal Veiligheidssysteem bestaat uit militairen en politie-agenten uit de lidstaten die wel onder nationaal bevel blijven staan. In september werd 2022 Gyana officieel lid van de RSS nadat de president het Instrument of Accession ondertekende. Jamaica werd op1 augustus 2023 lid.

The Regional Security System (RSS) was created out of a need for a collective response to security threats, which were impacting on the stability of the region in the late 70’s and 80’s. In October, 1982 four members of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) (Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Barbados to provide for mutual assistance on request. This gave rise to the birth of the RSS. St. Kitts and Nevis became a signatory in February, 1984 and Grenada in January, 1985. The Treaty establishing the RSS was signed at St. George’s, Grenada on 5 March 1996 replacing the MOU. The System has the status of an international organisation and enjoys legal personality. In September 2022, Guyana formally joined the RSS after the president of Guyana signed the Instrument of Accession. Jamaica joined in August 1, 2023
